Week- 5 - Solid meshing

AIM:

The Rearview mirror component should mesh by using tetra volume mesh and clear the kinks and dips.

OBJECTIVE:

The component should check for geometry errors and clean up the failing surfaces for minimum elements length and should be mesh by tria or ortho tria.

Element quality criteria for meshing the rearview component

S.No Quality Criteria Value
1 Target/Average Length 1
2 Minimum Length 0.5
3 Maximum Length 2
4 Tet Collapse 0.2

Following the quality parameters using tetra mesh volume and clearing the kinks and dips.

SUMMARIES

The solid meshing is also called volume mesh, these component need to be mesh by shell meshing on its actually CAD geometry for both surfaces instead of taking mid surface for 2D meshing as solid meshing needs to be extracted in 3D view, so both surfaces of geometry need to meshed by using tetra or Hexa depends on the component. Tria and ortho tria elements are used in the tetra mesh as both elements vary some consistency depends upon the surface as ortho tria gives a better result for curved surfaces and tria for plane surfaces. To view the result rearview component is meshed by both parameters.

PROCEDURE:

The Rearview component is opened in Ansa preprocessor for solid meshing, the component surface is not connected with each other, so topology is done on the component and checks with geometry errors. The Rearview does not have any errors and surface bend and ready for the meshing.

As comparing the meshing part by auto or manual, I have tried to mesh this component by an auto mesh which also called Batch Mesh.

batch mesh when we have a CAD or surface snd we have to deploy mesh on its surface, we generally use batch mesh. (We can use batch mesh to non-uniform thickness, mould or cast).

For batch meshes, some parameters need to set. First checking with the property assigned properly and then in Batch meshing giving new meshing scenario with quality parameter and meshing parameter but for this wee need to proceed either with ortho tria or tria, as for this component, we proceed with ortho tria elements.Getting the batch to mesh completed, the flow for meshing is good and tria at the plane surface is not linear, which will give satisfactory volume mesh.

In batch meshing, the feature line which is not up to the minimum length is removed automatically. The manual mesh is tried with 2D tetra shell mesh, the component has 4 parts, first, the base part at the curve is meshed with ortho tria to get proper mesh flow and reconstructed with it to obtain the best possible result and plane surface meshes with tria elements.

As the same process is followed for other parts and deployed with proper mesh flow.

Deploying the 2D shell tetra mesh on the component, now to obtain the volume mesh on the component, the component is defined manually.

As the component has different parts they has have to defined differently to have the volume mesh flow properly.

As the getting volume meshes on the component, there are some kinks and dips which are fixed manually by aligning them by selecting the kinks node a selecting two points, as same procedures is flowed fo the dips as well.

RESULT:

The rearview component is deployed with volume mesh and spot mesh in shell elements with tria and ortho tria, the component has minimum errors which are fixed with reconstructing the mesh and giving the numb increase or decrease option.

CONCLUSION:

The challenge is to understand the 3D solid meshing use different options and getting the proper mesh flow with no tet collapse and kinks.
