Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly
Aim: For the given models, check for the geometrical errors and delete surfaces which are unwanted for Surface wrap. After clearing geometry, Merge all 3 models and perform surface wrap of target length 3mm.
Introduction:
Surface wrap is the meshing the component from outside and is not dealing with inside component. Surface wrap is to analyse or study to outside flow simulation or analysis.
Procedure:
- Import the engine model to the ANSA software.
- Change draw mode from ENT to PID mode so the colour of the model change for the entire model for different PID generated in model. Because the model is not sufficient work on ENT mode.
- Since the model has huge number of Rings, Gleaching surfaces, over left surfaces. This should be deleted before going further.
- The small surfaces outside the model will be deleted first.
- Since these small surfaces are insides the model and the small surfaces, rings are with the model should be zoomed and should tilt the model to very well delete it.
- To do the surface wrap the outside portion should be clean, so the overlapped surface and Gleaching surfaces should be topo cleaned up.
- Some surfaces two surfaces has been merged, hence in those surfaces one surface should be hide by using I Not option should be delete the second surface.
- Since it has a huge number of these type of surface, in order to delete it a easy way by using I Not- PID option we should hide the main components or main PID’s and then we can easily delete it.
- Similarly some of the components which is not important for the model and which is also overlapped, this should be deleted.
- These surfaces are some ringed structured like pipes and belts.
- Moving on surface wrap is done only for the outside the model not for the inside so we should not waste our time and concentration on inside the model.
- To do so we should close all holes, and all openings outside the model. If we didn’t do so the mesh will be generated inside the model.
- Similarly we should do same steps for the two models like gear box and transmission.
- In gear box outside the model the blue cons are present and some surfaces are not clearly modelled hence we should neatly clean by using project cons option and creating some new surfaces.
- In gear box we didn’t find any small over left surfaces, rings, Gleaching in the model, so we can save and move further for the next model.
- Move to the next model transmission, here by hiding the main PID’s and deleting the small surfaces which can be deleted and some bleaching in the model will be deleted.
- Now the model has been top clean up very well we can save it and kept it aside.
- Moving on by opening the engine model in the software and we should merge or add the other two models and can be meshed.
- Opening the file option, and select eh merge option, click on ok, select the transmission model and click open, now the merge option will done and joined with the main model i.e. engine model, similarly we should merge the gearbox to this main model which is merged with the transmission model.
- Moving further to the next step is meshing (Surface mesh).
- By clicking on the mesh mode, in this mode by scrolling down for elements- wrap- constant length option.
- In this option, double click on the status option, here it should be opted Octree, and should be give the parameters and contents here.
- First by clicking on the parameter option and given the required mesh length of 3mm, and should be checked for the assigned properties from structure.
- Before giving the contents here first we should delete the deleted PID’s from the compress option in utility option.
- By doing this huge number of PID’s will be deleted and can be given in the content
- By going to the content option and selecting all the PID’s and click on ok option and run option.
- By enabling the perims, single, double, triple geometry, FE-model and we can check the model for the analysis purpose.
Result: Surface wrap has been done to the given models like Engine, Transmission, and Gear box model.
Conclusion:
For the analysis of flow properties outside the geometry we should first clean all the extra surfaces or small components like rings, pipes, overlapped surfaces outside the geometry and should minimize it by topo clean up the geometry. After topo clean-up we should generate the surface wrap mesh to the model. By using merge option and joining the Engine, Transmission, and Gear box model and surface wrap mesh to analyse the flow for the given geometry.
