Week 5 Bending of iPhone
iPhone Bending
Objective:
To simulate the bending of iPhone as per the given cases below
Case 1: Simulate the model by placing the pushing fingers near one side of edge of iPhone.
Case 2: Move the pushing fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation.
Compare & tabulate the above two cases.
Geometry:
Case 1: The above geometry consists of a frame, a glass panel, inside of the iPhone, the rigid top fingers & the pushing fingers.
Case 2: The same geometry defined in Case 1 expect that the pushing fingers are shifted by X=22.5mm & Z=10mm to obtained the location as shown in the above fig.
Materials:
Structural Steel material data is shown above which is used as material for fingers.
Aluminum Alloy NL material data is shown above which is used as material for the frames.
Polyethylene material data is shown above which is used as material for the inside components.
Glass material data is shown above which is used as material for the display.
Contacts:
Frictionless contact is defined between all the contacts between fingers & the frames & also between frame & the inside of the iPhone.
Bonded contact is defined between display & the frame.
Joints:
The fingers(upper) are defined as fixed-body ground joint as there should not be any displacement.
The pushing fingers are defined as translational-body ground which tends to bend the iPhone as it displaces from its position.
Mesh:
Mesh metrics is shown above.
Face Sizing = 4mm
Smoothing is set to low
No of Nodes = 24219
No of Elements = 11615
Boundary Conditions:
The model is fixed at the defined positions.
Displacement of the frame is restricted in y-direction.
Joint load is specified as shown above.
The above boundary condition remains same for both the cases.
Analysis Settings:
All the 8 steps are assigned direct solver , weak springs are assigned as program controlled. Large deflection is turned On.
Energy Dissipation is set to 0.1. All the output controls are turned on.
Case 1:
Pushing fingers near one side of edge of iPhone.
Results:
Force Convergence & Time Increment:
Directional Deformation:
Directional deformation of complete model is shown above.
Directional Deformation of the frame:
Directional deformation of frame is shown above.
Fatigue Life:
Fatigue life of the frame is shown above.
Factor of Safety:
FOS of the frame is shown above.
Case 2:
Pushing fingers are shifted by X=22.5mm & Z=10mm to reach the center of iPhone as shown in the geometry fig. All the loading conditions & contacts remains the same.
Results:
Force Convergence & Time Increment:
Directional Deformation:
Directional deformation of the model is shown above.
Directional Deformation of the frame:
Directional deformation of the frame is shown above.
Fatigue Life:
Fatigue life of the frame is shown above.
Factor of Safety:
FOS of the frame is shown above.

From the above comparison it is seen that, for Case2 the FOS is slightly more than Case 1.
In terms of Directional deformation, Case 1 has slightly more deformation than Case 2 as seen above.
On the other hand Fatigue Life remains same in both cases.
