Week 5 Bending of iPhone
Objective:
To Simulate the bending of iPhone as per the given cases below
Case 1: Simulate the model as it is given in the video
Case 2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.
| Stress, MPa | Number of Cycles, N |
| 225 | 10000 |
| 175 | 100000 |
| 143 | 1000000 |
| 110 | 10000000 |
| 80 | 100000000 |
Procedure:
* Open ANSYS Work bench, from the analysis systems drop the Static structural in Project schematic.
* Select required material from materials, In our case we need Aluminum alloy NL, Polyethylene and Glass.
* Keep all the fingers as rigid except right side push finger.
* Import Geometry and open in design moduler to check the geometry. Open in Mechanical module and rename the parts for easy identification purpose. Allocate Aluminum to Case, Glass for screen and polyethylene for main body in materials.
* In the contacts, delete unnecessary contacts and rename them based on defination. Except glass to body, change remaining to frictionless.
* In the joints, allocate translational joint for both pushing fingers with global coordination system and for remaining supporting fingers allocate as fixed.
* Select push finger effective faces and iphone back face and give the face sizing as 4mm , and mesh the model.
* In the alalysis settings, simulation takes place in 8 steps and select all the faces using control, week springs: program controlled, large deflection: ON, stabilization: Constant.
* Insert dispalcement load and allocate it to body y- component keepsas free to move.
* Insert displacement joints and allocate them to to pushing fingers, with distance movement of 8mm in Y-direction.
* Fix the inside body faces as fixed support. belowis the picture for reference.
For Case 2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm.
* Change S-N curve properties as shown above.
* Insert Output results are, directional deformation, life of alluminum alloy NL and factor for the same.
Results:
case 1:
Directional deformation: 7.6578mm
Life: 86117 cycles.
Factor:
For Case 2:
Directional deformation: 6.2706mm
Conclusion:
Iphone bending simulation done sucessfully, above are the results in different case.
