Week 5 Bending of iPhone

Static Analysis on Bending of iPhone using ANSYS Workbench...

Material Used for both the Cases :-

1. AL Alloy NL :- used in Frame.

2. Glass :- used in Glass of the I-phone.

3. Polyethylene :- used in inside of the Mobile.

4. Structural Steel :- used for Fingers.

Meshing for both the Cases :-

Mesh Size :- 4 mm on the back side of the Frame and in pushing finger's.

Analysis Setting For both the Cases :-

Case 1: Simulate the model as it is given in the video.

Fixed & Translational Joints :-

Fixed Support & Displacements :- Fixed support is applied in inside material of the I-phone, So that Frame can't be able to flyoff by applying the displacement.

1. Directional Deformation (on Frame) :- Max. = 5.4227 & Min. = -0.85879

2. Equivalent Stress :- Max. = 795.3 MPa & Min. = 5.7031e-7 MPa

3. Equivalent Stress (on Frame) :- Max. = 600.2 MPa & Min. = 6.941 MPa

.

4. Equivalent Strain (on Frame) :- Max. = 0.0089665 & Min. = 0.00021064

5. Pressure :- Max. = 311.19 MPa & Min. = -221.64 MPa

Case 2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

Contact :- Frictionless & Bonded :- only "Display To Frame" is in "Bonded".

Fixed & Translational Joints :-

Fixed Support & Displacements :- Fixed support is applied in inside material of the I-phone, So that Frame can't be able to flyoff by applying the displacement.

1. Equivalent Stress (on Frame) :- Max. = 345.79 MPa & Min. = 8.3208 MPa

2. Equivalent Stress :- Max. = 660.35 MPa & Min. = 7.166e-7 MPa

3. Equivalent Strain (on Frame) :- Max. = 0.0051015 & Min. = 0.00041507

5. Directional Deformation (on Frame) :- Max. = 4.4939 & Min. = -0.48018

6. Safty Factor :- Max. = 15 & Min. = 0.80974

7. Life :- Max.= 1e8 & Min. = 0

8. Pressure :- Max. = 221.04 MPa & Min. = -345.79 MPa

Result & Conclusion :-

As we see from the above result;

For Stress on Frame :- (Case 2 < Case 1) Stress on the Frame of the I-Phone & in whole body of the I-Phone is less in Case 2, besause in Case 1 the force applied on I-phone through pushing fingers are near to the edge of the phone, which is irregular & In case 2 force applied in the middle of the I-phone, which is Uniform applied. So stress distribution is uniform/ in proper way in Case 2.

For Safty Factor :- For maximum , in both the cases are same, but for minimum (Case 2 > Case 1).

So, from both the condition,we can judge and select the Case 2 is showing better result than the Case 1.

Thus, the Bending of I-phone Simulation is performed for Stress, Strain, Directional Deformation, Safty Factor & for the Life of AL Alloy NL with the help of ANSYS Workbench for the betterment of the research & product development.
