1. Horn and Low-Power Auxiliary Devices

  • Application: Horns typically require less than 10V DC for operation.
  • Converter Type: DC-DC Buck Converter
    • Steps down the main DC bus voltage (e.g., 400V) to the required low voltage (e.g., 12V or 10V).
    • Efficiently provides regulated power for low-voltage loads.

2. Headlights, Tail Lights, and Interior Lighting

  • Application: Automotive lighting requires 12V or 24V DC.
  • Converter Type: DC-DC Buck Converter
    • Converts the main high-voltage battery output to 12V or 24V for lighting systems.
    • Ensures stable light output regardless of input voltage variations.

3. Infotainment and Control Electronics

  • Application: Infotainment systems, dashboard displays, and control modules operate at low DC voltages (5V or 3.3V).
  • Converter Type: DC-DC Buck Converter
    • Steps down voltage to levels suitable for microcontrollers and communication devices.
    • Provides smooth power to sensitive electronic components.

4. Traction Motor

  • Application: Powers the electric motor, which typically requires high DC voltage.
  • Converter Type: DC-AC Inverter
    • Converts the DC from the main battery into three-phase AC for the motor.
    • Includes pulse width modulation (PWM) for precise motor control.

5. Battery Charging (Onboard Charger)

  • Application: Converts AC from the grid into DC to charge the battery.
  • Converter Type: AC-DC Converter
    • Rectifies AC input into DC suitable for battery charging.
    • Often includes power factor correction (PFC) and smart charging algorithms.

6. Battery Management System (BMS)

  • Application: Powers the BMS circuitry to monitor and control battery health and safety.
  • Converter Type: DC-DC Buck Converter
    • Provides low-voltage DC (e.g., 5V or 3.3V) to the sensors and control circuits within the BMS.

7. Cabin HVAC System (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)

  • Application: Powers the compressor, fans, and heating elements.
  • Converter Type:
    • DC-AC Inverter: Converts high-voltage DC to three-phase AC for the compressor motor.
    • DC-DC Converter: Steps down voltage for fans and auxiliary systems.

8. Regenerative Braking

  • Application: Converts kinetic energy during braking back into electrical energy.
  • Converter Type: AC-DC Converter
    • Rectifies AC from the traction motor into DC to recharge the battery.

9. Power Steering System

  • Application: Electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) requires regulated DC power.
  • Converter Type: DC-DC Converter
    • Supplies 12V or 48V DC for the steering motor.

10. Auxiliary Battery Charging

  • Application: Maintains the 12V auxiliary battery that powers accessories when the main system is off.
  • Converter Type: DC-DC Buck Converter
    • Steps down the high-voltage DC bus to 12V to charge the auxiliary battery.

11. Wireless Charging (Optional in Modern EVs)

  • Application: Enables wireless power transfer for the EV battery.
  • Converter Type:
    • AC-DC Converter: Rectifies AC from the wireless charging pad into DC for the battery.
    • Resonant Converter: Matches the resonant frequency of the charging coils.

12. Active Suspension System

  • Application: Powers the actuators in adaptive suspension systems.
  • Converter Type: DC-AC Inverter
    • Provides variable-frequency AC for precision control of suspension actuators.
