Week 4 Session 5
Power converters play an important role in electric vehicles by converting and managing electrical energy for various vehicle systems. Different types of converters are employed based on the specific voltage and power requirements of each application within the EV. Some applications of power converters in an electric vehicle:
1. DC-DC Converter for Horn (Low Voltage): The horn typically requires DC voltage below 10V. A DC-DC converter (buck converter) is used to step downthe higher voltage from the EV's main battery to the appropriate voltage level for the horn.
2. DC-DC Converter for Accessories: Electric vehicles have various accessories like lights, radios, and air conditioning systems that require different voltage levels. DC-DC converters are used to provide the necessary voltage levels for these accessories.
3. Battery Charger (AC-DC Converter): When you need to charge the EV's battery from a household AC power source, an AC-DC converter is employed. It converts AC power to the DC voltage required for battery charging.
4. Inverter for Motor Drive (DC-AC Converter): The primary propulsion motor in an electric vehicle requires AC power. An inverter converts the DC power from the battery into three-phase AC power to drive the motor.
5. Regenerative Braking System:Power converters are used to manage the energy generated during regenerative braking. They convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy, which can be stored in the battery or dissipated.
6. On-Board Charger: EVs often have an on-board charger that allows for different charging speeds. Power converters are used to adjust the charging rate based on the input power source and battery state.
7. Battery Management System (BMS):BMS uses power converters to monitor and balance individual cells within the battery pack, ensuring efficient charging and discharging while preventing overcharging or over-discharging.
8. DC Fast Charging: For fast-charging stations, power converters are employed to provide the high-power DC voltage required for rapid charging of EVs.
9. Electric Power Steering (EPS): EPS systems use power converters to adjust the level of assistance provided to the driver, enhancing maneuverability and efficiency.
10. Heating and Cooling Systems:Converters can be used to regulate the power supplied to electric heaters and air conditioning compressors to maintain cabin comfort efficiently.
