Week 4 Session 5
Explain the various applications of Power converters in an Electric vehicle. For Example what type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V. Likewise come up with different applications
Four types of power converter
- AC to AC Converter
- AC to DC Converter
- DC to DC Converter
- DC to AC Converter
DC to DC Converter:
- Converts an unregulated DC input to a regulated DC output
- Non isolated converters: Buck, Boost, Buck Boost
- Isolated converters: Flyback, Forward, Half Bridge, Full Bridge
- Resonant Converters: Different family of DC-DC Converters, used for high power conversion
Why EV need DC-DC Converters:
- Delivering power to auxiliary loads operating at different voltages.
- Battery-to-charger station compatibility
- HV battery and LV battery link
- Using low voltage battery with high voltage motor systems
- Battery + Ultracapacitor & Battery + Fuel cell combination as energy storage solution
Application:
- AC to AC Converter - Home inverter and UPS
- AC to DC Converter - Mobile Charger
- DC to DC Converter - Laptop Charger
- DC to AC Converter - Locomotives
Applications of DC-DC Converter:
Type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V is DC-DC converter.
The horn works with DC power supply with a voltage of less than 10V so the DC-DC converter is used to step down the high-voltage DC supply from the vehicle's battery (typically 200-400V) to the lower voltage required by the horn.
Power Steering Converter electric power steering (EPS) systems assist the driver in steering the vehicle. A power converter is employed to provide the required power to the EPS motor, which adjusts the steering assistance based on driver input and vehicle conditions.
