Week 4- Challenge
Objective: To generate a mesh and create 1D elements such as ROD, BEAM, and BAR with specified dimensions on the given component and also apply the mass of specific magnitude on the component

Procedure:
Midsurfacing & Meshing
- Open hyper mesh and select Opti struct as the user interface
- Import the given cad model file into the hyper mesh and open the file.
- Click geometry and select mid surface feature
- To obtain a good mid surface, select offset+planes/ offset option in extraction
- Click on the surfaces and extract the mid surface by auto mid surface feature
- Rename the mid surfaces individually and delete the solids
- For 3D representation, thickness has to be assigned to the surface
- Create a material by name steel and select card image as MAT1
- Create two more properties and rename them as bracket 1& bracket 2
- Assign 2 & 2.5 as the thickness of surfaces respectively
- Select Pshell as card image and steel as a material in the properties
- Now assign these properties to their respective component
- Assign washer split at the holes on the component
- Select the entire component and generate a mesh with element size as 8.
1D element creation:
RBE2 &RBE3 Links:
- First RBE2 link has to be created along the holes on both surfaces at position (a)
- click 1D in the menu bar and select rigid element
- generate multiple nodes along the holes and assign only translational DOF
- now by clicking create an RBE2 link will be generated
- similarly, create RBE2 links at positions (d) and (e)
- similarily create RBE3 links with all DOF at position (b) and with only x & y DOF at position (c)
Creating BAR, ROD, and BEAM geometries:
- click 1D and select hyper beam, hyper beam view will be opened
- For Rod elements create a box cross-section by with the specified dimensions by the following steps ( create – standard section – optistruct/hyper beam – box )
- similarly, choose hyper beam instead of optistruct and create I section for beam and cross-section for the bar with specified dimensions
- To create a rod element, click the bar and select the nodes of the link on the upper and lower surfaces
- Select CROD as the element type and a ROD element is generated at position (a)
- Similarly, create BEAM and BAR elements at positions (b) and (c) respectively.
- Since the components properties are different from the properties of rod, beam, and bar, individual properties for each of them has to be created
|
Element type |
Card image |
Beam section |

ROD |
PROD |
Rod ( Box) |
|
BEAM |
PBEAM |
Beam (I section) |
|
BAR |
PBAR |
Bar (cross-section ) |
- All these elements have to be updated with these properties
- In order to update, select the elements and their respective element types & properties
- Assign a vector direction and click update
- In order to visualize the individual cross-sections, click 1D detailed element representation
- Now create a mass of magnitude 10 at the nodes of RBE2 link at positions (d) & (e) by selecting element type as CMASS1 and update it
- Finally, join the two components by spring element at (f) positions by selecting DOF1 and CELAS1 as the element type and update the component
Result :
Therefore a mid surface is generated for the surfaces and a mesh is generated on the entire component. Also, 1D elements such as ROD, BEAM, and BAR are created with specified dimensions and properties. Finally, a mass of magnitude 10 is created at the specified position.
