Challenge

Week 4- Challenge

Objective:

  • To create 1D elements on the bracket with given cross section and DOF

Case setup and execution:

  • Mesh generation

2D->Automesh is used to mesh the geometry. Min element size is set as 2mm, Max element size as 7mm and Target element size is 5mm. Only Quads option is used to generate mesh. Since the geometry is symmetric, do meshing only on one fourth of the model.

2D -> quality index

To view all failing elements by editing element criteria

Remesh areas where elements are failing using 2D automesh. Try to have only Quad elements. If trias are present, avoid head to trias as it can be converted into Quads easily.

2D -> smooth - To smoothen the mesh flow

Tools->Reflect – to mirror the mesh generated on other side. Duplicate the elements first and then reflect.

Tools -> edges - To verify the connectivity of the elements and check quality again to verify.

After creating 2D meshes on both upper and lower brackets, create material and property (with thickness 5mm) for both.

  • 1D Elements generation

Create RBE2 link on hole a, d and e

1D -> Rigids -> select nodes on holes for dependent node and select calculate node for independent node

Create RBE3 link on hole b and c

1D -> RBE3 -> select nodes on holes for independent node and select calculate node for dependent node

Now we will create cross sections for the Rod, Bar and Beam elements.

1D -> HyperBeam -> standard section

Create Thin walled box, I section and Cross section in HyperBeam with the dimensions given in the question.

Now create property for Rod (PROD), Bar (PBAR), and Beam (PBEAM) in HyperMesh window and assign corresponding Beamsection for each property.

  1. Rod element:- with only translational DOF and property PROD

1D -> Rods -> select independent nodes of both brackets on hole A

  1. Beam element:- with all DOF and property PBEAM

1D -> Bar -> select property as CBEAM and select dependent nodes of both brackets on Hole B

  1. Bar element:- with only x and y DOFs and property PBAR

1D -> Bar -> select property as CBAR and select dependent nodes of both brackets on Hole C

  1. & e. apply the mass of magnitude 10

1D -> masses -> select ELEM as CMASS1 and select independent node of both brackets on Hole D and E.

  1. Join the two components with Spring elements

1D -> springs -> select independent node of both brackets on Hole D and E
