Extraction of midsurface and meshing of plastic component (bottle cap) using ANSA
Extraction of midsurface and meshing of plastic component (bottle cap) using ANSA
Aim:
Midsurface extraction and meshing of bottle cap using below quality criteria.
Procedure:
1. The below model is imported and geometry checks is done and if any errors are found they are fixed.
The errors will be single or triple cons in the model.
2. Midsurface is extraction is done using following list of tools
- Middle (To get middle surface between two faces)
- Offset
- Extend (To extend a face to another specified face)
- Curves (To specify the path of the geometry so that new faces can be created using the path)
- New (in Faces options to create a new face using cons or specified curves)
The midsurface extracted is as below
As seen below the midsurface is taken for the inner small surface as well so that Finite element mesh will be equivalent to the actual inputed model.
The threads are not taken into consideration as they are too small and will fail the quality criteria.
3. Meshing the above mid surface using below tools
Mesh surface is as shown below.
The mesh obtained satisfies all the quality criteria with 96.43% quad elements and 3.57% tria elements.
4. Thickness is set for each of macro area using Set PID according to actual thickness of imported model.
5. Shell as solid is turned on to see the meshed elemental area with above assigned thickness.
Learning Outcomes:
Learned to take midsurface of a plastic component with varying thickness.
Understood to eliminate tria elements using different tools such as split, join, reconstruct, improve etc.
Conclusion:
The midsurface was successfuly extracted for given model and a smooth mesg flow was obtained following quality criteria.
