Week - 3 Drop test Challenge

https://docs.google.com/document/d/15P6gLgD_lQc2IoyIm9ytG7ubYsVds4cBUNfzDhUnSIM/edit?usp=sharing

Aim:

  • To conduct the Drop test on Solid block in ls Dyna

Procedure:

  • Material Definition
    • *MAT_020 - Which is used to make the part as rigid by checking the CMO as 1 and also CON1 for constraining the translation CON2 for rotation
    • Steel properties is given as Density, E and nu for mat_20 and It is given to the base shell or solid
    • *MAT_24 - Piecewise linear plasticity. Which is used to define plastic portion of the material by defining the either tangent modulus or material curve
    • It is given to the Solid block which would drop from a certain height.
    • NOTE: As we do not have lab dat, we are giving the tangent modulus to define the non linear portion of the material.
  • Section definition
    • *SECTION_SHELL - used to define thickness and element formulation to the shell elements. In simple terms, if the user wants to make any changes in the actual behaviour of elements, we can change it here. As of now, we are using the default properties of element and thickness as 1.5
    • *SECTION_SHELL - USe to define the solid element properties
  • Contact and other parameter Definition
    • *AUTOMATIC_SURFACE_TO_SURFACE - Contact is created between the solid and shell
    • Velocity - -20mm/ms is given to the solid block in the Z direction
    • Termination - 3 is given as termination time
    • D3plot - is requested in the database.

RESULTS:

The maximum von mises stress is 15 MPa in the z-direction.

  • The total energy is constant throughout the simulation but there is a slight deviation that happens when the solid hits the shell. After that, it is constant.
  • Kinetic energy is constant till the impact happens. While the impact happens, it is reduced after that the velocity of the model decreases so the kinetic energy also decreased.
  • Internal Energy is 0 till the impact happens after that it is increased slightly

Conclusion:

We have done the drop test on the solid block and the results also discussed
