Week 3 - 2D meshing for Sheet metal
Objective:
The main aim is to mesh the mid-surface of hood inner panel model under given quality criteria using ANSA Software. And to use efficient method to do geometry clean up and get mid surface of hood inner panel model.
Procedure with CAD model images:
- The fig.1 shows given CAD model from Design team.
As shown in figures below the given CAD model geometry needs to do geometry and topology clean-up.
Fig. 1: CAD MODEL OF HOOD INNER PANEL
Fig. 2: Geometrical and topological distortion.
- After importing .stl file in ANSA, observation found that 26 unchecked areas were present in cad model where geometry needs to be check for clean-up.
- Start with checking single, double and triple cons. I have used Topo option in faces module to remove unnecessary single cons and Release option in CONS module to release triple cons.
Fig.3 Geometry after clean up and refinement.
- To refine the feature areas of geometry, used fine option which is available in Auxiliary module.
Fig.4 geometry presentation with modules buttons
- As shown in fig.5 below the half symmetric part of the geometry deleted for easy of work. (By considering transform symmetry operation for further work.)
- The mid-surface extracted using manual method by using offset option which is available in faces module.
- The reason behind using manual mid surface extraction method is to not increase process time to regain parent faces. (As known in automatic mid surface extraction case the parent faces gets deleted.)

- The separate properties were assigned for extracted mid-surface using set PID option available in faces module.
Fig.6 Half mid surface with separate property card.
- The whole clean up and refinement was done for half portion of the mid-surface.
- Before going for meshing check geometry executed in check manager.
Fig. 7. Geometry check before meshing.
- In meshing mode the given mesh parameter and quality criteria were set for meshing.
- 8 and fig.9 shows below the input mesh parameter and quality criteria values.

- The meshing started by using face section. Best mesh option used in meshing module for meshing.
- The reconstruct mesh option used which was available shell mesh module for better element arrangement and mesh flow.
- Split and smooth options also used for better mesh flow.

- Fig . 10 shows that half mid-surface meshed model of hood inner panel successfully under given quality criteria.

- After completing meshing over half mid-surface, transform geometry option were use for performing symmetry operation to complete meshed full model.
- The Mirror three point option used for performing symmetry operation as shown in fig.11 below.
Fig .11 half inner panel meshed with given quality criteria for symmetry operation.
- As shown in fig 12. Below, after performing symmetry operation the full meshed mid surface of hood inner panel is obtained under given quality criteria.

Results:
The geometrical clean up, mid surface extraction and meshing of hood inner panel successfully carried out under given quality criteria with less trias percentage and better mesh flow using ANSA Software.
