Week 3 - 2D meshing for sheet metal
WEEK 3 Challenge
Aim To develop a mesh for given Sheet metal part.
Procedure:
Set mesh Parameters and Quality criteria
Resolution: set perimeter length to 1
Measure the thickness of sheet metal for different region.
Run geometry check and fix issues.
To develop an auto mid surface using skin option we need closed volume.
On Mid surface extraction, delete unnecessary hot points, defeature the surface as per need.
Set perimeter length to target length
Generate mesh by using Mesh>Mesh Generation>Best option
Fix Quality issues by MV Free command
Eliminate Trias using Collapse, Split, Swap, Paste options.
The fillet region fails in aspect as well as minimum length, Defeature the fillet throughout using Join Option.
Defeaturing the fillet
remove unnecessary perimeter lines
Capture features
Assign thickness value to mesh
Shell to solid off
shell to solid on
Learning Outcomes:
Geometry check, Mesh parameters, Quality Criteria
Use of following commands: -
topo, join, cut, split, swap, paste, combine, Best, Shell to Solid,
smooth, reconstruct
Assigned keyboard shortcuts for different commands
Defeaturing best practices
Capture peak of punch or fillet, remove unnecessary hot points and perimeters, eliminate opposite trias, reduce number of trias, no trias at perimeter and edges.
Conclusion
Identified different features and developed methods to capture them, better mesh flow was developed and elimination of trias and quality off elements was carried out using options discussed above. It is in my knowledge that to develop a mid-surface for sheet metal parts can be done manually using offset method and automatically using skin option. Further the modifications are done using options in Mesh module. Assigning thickness in PID and finally checking the mesh and CAD alignment using shell to solid option are general practices.
