Challenge

Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

AIM

For the given model, check for the geometrical errors and perform topology cleanup accordingly. Set three different target lengths as three different cases and mesh the model.

Target length: 1mm,3mm,5mm

Element type: Tria

Apply any one target length from the above at a time for the entire model as one case. Submit 3 different models for 3 cases.

PROCEDURE

Topology Clean Up

The given model has many open red lines, curves, and closed boundaries. So we need to provide faces to those boundaries. Check for geometrical errors and rectify single cons, and irregular faces, and remove certain faces and lines to make a perfect face.

Error Rectification

Avoid single and triple coons(red and blue lines and borders). Use the Topo command under face.

PID Setting

Use the PID command under the model drop menu. We found Shell Property PID in it. Make 7 PIDs such as COLUMN, SPRING, COLUMN BOTTOM, COLUMN TOP, BODY, INLET and OUTLET. To each PID add the respective parts to them by using NOT and ENT commands for isolating and use left click+middle click for applying to the PID. To view the PIDs activate PID mode under the ENT drop menu near the shadow command.

Error Rectification

In order to solve intersection errors use the intersect command under the faces. Select the column ist and the spring 2nd. It shows the faces to keep and delete. Use shift+ctrl to do it one by one.

Meshing

There are 3 target lengths given in the challenge:

  • Target Length - 1mm

Minimum Length - 0.5mm

Maximum Length - 3mm

  • Target Length - 3mm

Minimum Length - 1mm

Maximum Length - 5mm

  • Target Length - 5mm

Minimum Length - 3mm

Maximum Length - 7mm

The procedure for meshing is as before - perimeter(lengths) < mesh parameters(general < target length) < quality criteria(max and min) < classic mesh < mesh generation < spot mesh.

CONCLUSION

With fine mesh accuracy increases but the time required for calculation increases.

For smaller parts such as the spring, column head, and bottom the target length recommended should be 1mm for good accuracy whereas for the body the recommended target length should be 3mm.
