Week 2 Challenge

1. How will you assign Circular section to column?

AIM:

To assign a circular section to a column in structural analysis and design software like STAAD Pro, you typically follow these steps:

INTRODUCTION:

Columns are defined as vertical load-bearing members supporting axial compressive loads chiefly. This structural member is used to transmit the load of the structure to the foundation. In reinforced concrete buildings beams, floors, and columns are cast monolithically. The bending action in the column may produce tensile forces over a part of cross-section. Still, columns are called compression members because compressive forces dominate their behavior.

PROCEDURE:-

a. Open your structural model in STAAD Pro.

b. Select the column element that you want to assign a circular section to.

c. Access the element properties or edit the column properties.

d. In the properties dialog, look for the section assignment or shape assignment options.

e. Choose the circular section from the available section shapes.

f. Specify the necessary geometric parameters for the circular section, such as the diameter and thickness if applicable.

2. How will you assign Unit system to a .std model file?

PROCEDURE:-

To assign a unit system to a .std model file in STAAD Pro, you usually follow these steps:

  • a. Open the .std model file in STAAD Pro.

    b. Go to the "File" or "Settings" menu.

    c. Look for an option related to unit systems or units.

    d. Select the appropriate unit system, such as metric or imperial.

    e. Confirm the unit system change and save the file.

3. What are the parameters to be specified while using “Bay Frame” option?

ANSWER:-

The specific parameters to be specified when using the "Bay Frame" option in structural analysis and design software like STAAD Pro may vary based on the software version and user preferences. However, typical parameters include:

- Bay width: The distance between two consecutive frames or bents.

- Bay depth: The distance between the transverse or longitudinal frames.

- Material properties: Assigning the material properties for the bay frame elements.

- Section properties: Defining the cross-sectional properties of the bay frame members.

- Boundary conditions: Specifying how the bay frame is connected to other structural elements.

4. Name few codal standards incorporated in STAAD Pro software.

ANSWER:-

  • 4. STAAD Pro incorporates various codal (code) standards for structural design and analysis. The specific standards available may depend on the software version and the license you have. Common codal standards incorporated in STAAD Pro include:

    - AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction)

    - ACI (American Concrete Institute)

    - Eurocode (European standards for structural design)

    - IS (Indian Standards for structural design)

    - BS (British Standards for structural design)

    - CSA (Canadian Standards Association)

  • You can select the appropriate codal standard based on the location and requirements of your structural project.

5. How will you specify the design compressive strength for a RCC section?

ANSWER:-

  • 5. To specify the design compressive strength for a reinforced concrete (RCC) section correctly in STAAD Pro, you typically need to define the following parameters:

    a. Open your structural model in STAAD Pro.

    b. Select the concrete section that you want to specify the design compressive strength for.

    c. Access the section properties or properties dialog.

    d. In the properties dialog, look for the material or concrete properties.

    e. Enter the design compressive strength (in appropriate units) based on the code or standard you are using, such as ACI, Eurocode, or others.

Ensure that you use the correct units and values as specified by the applicable design code for your region.

Q2.

1. State the “Input” steps involved in RCC design.

PROCEDURE:-

1. GEOMETRY:-

The node location and the node spacing are given `

2. PROPERTIES:-

3. MATERIALS:-

Specify the properties of the materials

4. SPECIFICATION:-

The specification are given

5. SUPPORT :-

The end support are to be given as per necessity

6. LOADING:-

Need to provide the loading pattern and the loading combination

7. ANALYSIS:-

Need to analyse the model and all the input specifications are given

8. DESIGN:-

Finally the design are to be done

2. Explain the difference between Fixed and Enforced support condition in STAADPro.

ANSWER:-

  • Fixed Support: Fixed support conditions in STAAD Pro indicate that certain degrees of freedom for a node are fully restrained, meaning they cannot displace or rotate. These degrees of freedom are effectively removed from consideration when generating the stiffness matrix for the structure. Consequently, no calculations are made for their displacement or rotation values.

Enforced Support: In contrast, enforced support conditions in STAAD Pro are used when you want to assign springs of zero stiffness to degrees of freedom that should remain free to displace. This means that for all 6 degrees of freedom (translation and rotation) at such enforced supports, the software calculates and considers displacements. It's important to note that these displacements will be influenced by any applied loads and boundary conditions, even though the support conditions may appear to restrict movement.

This differentiation between fixed and enforced support conditions is significant when modeling and analyzing structures in STAAD Pro, as it affects the behavior of the nodes and elements in the analysis.

Q3.

1. Explain the steps involved in analysis of a model using STAAD Pro sequentially.

ANSWER:-

Steps involved in the of a model using STAAD Pro sequentially are as follow;

Create model using node system or create by using the structural wizard

Add beams

Choose properties

Add supports

Add specificaton if any

Add loadings

Apply perform analysis

Run the MODEL

Goto post processing

Note DISPLACEMENT SHEAR FORCE AND BENDING MOMENT

2. Explain the two ways in which a structural framework/model can be created in STAAD Pro software.

ANSWER:-

By Analytical Model

By Physical Model

STAAD.Pro Physical Modeler takes advantage of physical modeling to simplify of modeling a structure, which in turn more accurately reflects the process of building a model. Beams and surfaces are placed in the model on the scale of which they would appear in the physical world.

3. Elaborate the different support conditions in STAAD Pro.

ANSWER:-

The various types of the supports available in the STAAD pro are as follows;

1.FIXED:-

All the transitional and rotational displacement are restrained

2. PINNED:-

Transitional displacement are restrained but rotational oments are not restrained

3. FIXED BUT:-

The fixed support is similar to pinned support it allows us to provide the degree of freedom to view the displacement either translation or rotational

4. ENFORCED:-

When enforced supports are assigned to the structure the software allows the springs to itself and the displacement can be calculated however there is no provision to provide the spring constant

5. ENFORCED BUT:-

The software assigns the spring itself with zero stiffness or high stiffness
