Week 12:Project 2-Meshing of Rear Wheel Holder challenge
Aim
To generate midsurface for rear wheel holder and the mesh the component according to the given quality criteria given below.
Target Element Length = 5mm
| S.N | Quality Criteria | Value |
| 1 | Aspect Ratio | 5 |
| 2 | Skewness | 45 |
| 3 | Warping | 15 |
| 4 | Taper | 0.5 |
| 5 | Min. Length | 2mm |
| 6 | Max. Length | 8mm |
| 7 | Min angle Quad | 45 |
| 8 | Max angle Quad | 135 |
| 9 | Min angle Tria | 20 |
| 10 | Max angle Tria | 120 |
| 10 | Tria % | 10 |
Methodology
- Generate midsurface for rear wheel holder.
- Mesh the component according to the given quality criteria.
- Assign proper thickness according to the parent geometry.
Procedure
Since the component has uniform thickness throughout, the midsurface was extracted using Geom > Midsurface > auto extraction. The surfaces which were distorted were deleted and extracted again using surface edit > offset.
The extracted midsurface is shown below.

The unnecessary trims were suppressed and mesh was generated in one shot using 2D > automesh > surfaces were selected using surfs > target size was set as 5 mm > mesh.
The mesh was rebuilt using automesh > elements were selected using elems > mesh. The mesh generated is given below.

Elements were failing for minimum size where sharp edges existed. One such instance is shown below.

Since elements should not fail for minimum size as it affects the speed of simulation, one of the sharp edges were suppressed after a split was made and elements were remeshed in that area. These elements were no more failing for minimum size. The remeshed elements are shown below.

Whereever sharp edges existed, the elements failing for minimum size were corrected like this. Similarly for other areas, the elements were remeshed and final mesh is given below. No elements were failing for minimum size.

Material was assigned to the mesh and property was assigned with thickness as 0.75 mm.

Conclusions
- Midsurface was extracted.
- Mesh was generated according to the quality criteria.
- Appropriate thickness was assigned.
