Challenge

Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Car Crash Simulation Report

Aim: For this challenge, you will have to perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. You need to apply the same conditions as mentioned in the video that corresponds to this challenge. Analyse the total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.

Procedure:

  • Select Explicit Dynamics, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
  • Stainless Steel NL is chosen under Engineering Data.
  • Under geometry tab, import the given geometry, double-click to open Space Claim to register the model.
  • Under geometry tab, the Car Body was given to be made of Stainless Steel NL with thickness of the mesh as a parameter.
  • Symmetry was given to the wall face as well as the edge of the car body.
  • Body Interactions were set to frictionless.
  • Mesh size was set to default and meshed.
  • Under explicit dynamics tab, we set the analysis to 1 step with end time 1e-3s.
  • Displacement of 500mm is given to the wall.
  • The parts of the care body which may not be harmed in the crash are fixed.
  • Total deformation, Directional Deformation (along X axis) and Equivalent Stress plots are requested from the solver as outputs.
  • Run the simulation by clicking on “solve”.
  • The parametrized thickness of car body mesh is changed to evaluate results for various cases:

Case 1: 0.3mm

Case 2: 0.4mm

Case 3: 0.5mm

Case 1: 0.3mm thick car body mesh

Total Deformation:

Eq. Stress:

Directional Deformation (X axis):

Case 2: 0.4mm thick car body mesh

Total Deformation:

Eq. Stress:

Directional Deformation (X axis):

Case 3: 0.5mm thick car body mesh

Total Deformation:

Eq. Stress:

Directional Deformation (X axis):

Conclusion:

From the above simulations, here is the inference:

Case: Thickness

Eq. Stress (MPa)

Tot. Deformation (mm)

Directional Deformation X-axis (mm)

Case 1: 0.3mm

13152

1039.9

56.504

Case 2: 0.4mm

13153

1038.5

55.427

Case 3: 0.5mm

13154

1037.1

54.668

We can observe that the deformations in case 3 is the least as the thickness is maximum.
