Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Objective = To perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. Analyse the total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.

Solution -

We open the ansys workbench and add the three materials mentioned in the objective.

Materials properties

Stainless steel NL

Now we upload the model to the geometry and open it in space clam and see if there are any discontinuities in the model.

Update the model to the mechanical module. And Opening the module.

The wall is set for a structural steel material.

For the car body we add stainless steel NL (Non leniar) is set and tick on the box infront of thickness. we see a 'P' symbol in the box.

Thus peremetric option is selected. As we want to do a parametric study for various thickness.

For the Explicit dynamic analysis we are not intrested in the contacts so we delete the contacts.

Also we add a symmetry region option as only half of the car body is present. Also we add a symmetric region for the wall.

we add a tetrahedrons method to the wall and add a face sizing of 30 mm element size to the faces which come in contact with the wall.

face sizing

Mesh

For the analysis settings we set end time to 0.001.

We add a fixed support to the back of the car and a displacement to the wall.

Displacement

Now we add the total deformation and Equivalent stress in the results.

Also we tick the box of Parametric for both the results.

Thickness 0.3 mm

Equivalent stress

Total Deformation

Thickness 0.2 mm

Equivalent stress

Total Deformation

Thickness 0.4 mm

Equivalent stress

Total Deformation

Comparison Table

parameters Units Thickness 0.2 Thickness 0.3 Thickness 0.4

2 Total Deformation(max) MM 1035.5 1034.4 1032.9

Conclusion

From the table we see that as the thickness decreases the stress and the total deformation increases. But on the other side if we increase the thickness the weight of chassis will increase and inturn reducer the efficiency of engine.

Thus we need to select the thickness depending upon the safety factor for any vehicle.
