Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Car Crash Simulation

Objective:
To perform a parametric car crash simulation for three different thickness of the car body & compare the total deformation and equivalent stress.

Geometry:

The above geometry consist of a car body & a wall as seen above.

Symmetry:

For decreasing the computational load, the actual car body & wall geometry has been considered as a symmetric half as shown above.

Materials:

Structural Steel NL is defined as material for the car body & its properties are shown above.

Structural Steel is defined as material for the wall & its properties are shown above.

Mesh:

Mesh metrics is shown above.
Min Size: 11.2mm
Max Face Size: 56.04mm
Max Tetra Size: 56.04mm
No of Nodes: 10826
No of elements: 29041

Boundary Conditions:

A displacement load is given to the wall in Z direction as shown above.

The cad body is fixed at the above highlighted location as shown above.

Analysis Settings:

The above analysis settings is used with a end time of 6e-4s.

Table of design points:

Parametric simulation is run for different car body wall thickness & the corresponding total deformation & equivalent stress.

Case 1: 0.3mm car body thickness

Energy Conservation:

Time Increment:

Results:

Total Deformation:

A max Total deformation of 0.74461m as shown above.

Equivalent Stress:

Max Equivalent Stress of 1.5167e10Mpa is seen as shown above.

Case 2: 0.5mm car body thickness

Energy Conservation:

Time Increment:

Total Deformation:

Total Deformation of 0.73977m as seen above.

Equivalent Stress:

Max Equivalent Stress of 1.5047e10Mpa as shown above.

Case 3: 0.6mm car body thickness

Energy Conservation:

Time Increment:

Total Deformation:

Total Deformation of 0.73723m as shown above.

Equivalent Stress:

Max Equivalent Stress of 1.5035e10Mpa as shown above.

Comparison:

Total Deformation (m)

Directional Deformation X (m)

Directional Deformation Y (m)

Directional Deformation Z (m)

Equivalent Stress
(Mpa)

Case 1

0.74461

0.0187733

0.053118

0.74335

1.516e10

Case 2

0.73977

0.019196

0.052366

0.73848

1.5047e10

Case 3

0.73723

0.019082

0.051953

0.73593

1.5035e10

From the above comparison table, it’s clear that more the wall thickness of the car body lesser is the deformation & the equivalent stresses. Hence, Case 3 (0.6mm) has the least deformation & equivalent stress.
