Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

  • Objective:-

To simulate an explicit dynamics problem of a bullet penetrating a bucket, with different materials of the bucket.

  • Model Details:-

Image above shows the given model for simulation. It consists of a bullet and a bucket. In the mesh, the two edges (front and rear) which might come in contact with the bullet during penetration are applied to a fine mesh using edge sizing.

The three different materials chosen for the bucket are Aluminium 1100-O (Case1), Copper (Case2) and Lead (Case3) from the explicit materials library. Their shear modulus are as follow,

Aluminium 1100-O = 27.1 GPa

Copper = 46.4 GPa

Lead = 8.6 GPa

  • Loads and Constraints:-

The bucket is applied with a fixed support and the bullet is applied at an initial velocity of 139 m/sec towards the bucket.

  • Results:-

Case1:-

Animation for the total deformation = https://youtu.be/zU7Z1lkQyDY

Max. bullet penetration into the bucket = 58.606 mm

Max. force reaction = 44500 N

Max. equivalent stress = 194.59 MPa

Case2:-

Animation for the total deformation = https://youtu.be/VyQ8vGqJ5k0

Max. bullet penetration into the bucket = 29.124 mm

Max. force reaction = 78221 N

Max. equivalent stress = 423.45 MPa

Case3:-

Animation for the total deformation = https://youtu.be/5WPdk5ZOMcg

Bullet penetrated through one side and deformed the other side,

Max. force reaction = 15138 N

Max. equivalent stress = 86.421 MPa

  • Conclusion:-

We can conclude that the simulation has been successfully completed. From the materials we can see that copper has the highest shear modulus, then aluminium 1100 and at last lead. The material with highest shear modulus will show the highest resistance against the bullet.

Hence we can see that, copper has the least penetration of the bullet (29.124 mm) and then comes aluminium (58.606 mm) and at last lead, in which the bullet passes through the first edge and bumps into the second edge.

Also the force reactions for copper is the highest due to high shear modulus.
