Challenge

Simulating a bullet penetrating the bucket using explicit dynamic module in Ansys with three different explicit materials

OBJECTIVE

To simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket with three different materials and comparing the results.

Importing the CAD model

The CAD model is imported using spaceclaim and checked for any geometry errors.

Simulation setup

Material Assignment

The bullet is assigned with material TANTALUM.

The bucket is assigned with three different materials in three cases

Case (1) - AL 1100-O

Case (2) - COPPER

Case (3) - Aluminium

The body interactions between the bullet and bucket is defined as frictionless.

Mesh Generation

The model is meshed with an element size of 12mm

Analysis settings

The simulation is set to an end condition of 0.01 seconds

The bullet velocity is defined as 139 m/s in negative x-axis direction.

The surface of bucket is given as fixed support making sure that the bucket does not move.

Results

Case (1) - AL 1100-O

Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Case (2) - COPPER

Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Case (3) - Aluminium

Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Conclusion

Material Maximum Total Deformation Maximum Equivalent Stress
AL 1100 - O 1689.4 mm 219.2 MPa
Copper 1390. mm 450. MPa
Aluminium 1390. mm 290. MPa

The high value of total deformation in all three cases is due to particles flying of from bucket after bullet impact.

These particles travel a large distance and thus increase the deformation value.

The maximum deformation occurs in AL 1100-O and maximum stress is induced in copper material.
