Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
OBJECTIVE:-
- To perform an Explicit Analysis of bullet penetrating a bucket by using 3 different kinds of non-linear materials.
Geometry:
Materials:
Bullet is kept as Rigid with TANTALUM as material and the Bucket is assigned with Copper Alloy NL, Aluminium Alloy NL and Stainless Steel NL material, for 3 different kinds of cases.
Connections:
In Explicit Analysis, the model mainly depends mainly on Body Interactions.
Mesh:
Mesh size of 6 mm was used for the Bucket.
Analysis Settings:
End time = 1e-002 s
Fixed support:
Velocity:
Velocity of 139000 mm/s was assigned to the bullet in the -ve X-direction.
Solutions:
Case 1 : Copper Alloy NL
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 1390 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 0 MPa , Max. value = 2574.7 MPa
Equivalent Strain:
Min. value = 0 , Max. value = 2.4599e-2
Case 2 : Aluminium Alloy NL
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 764.5 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 0 MPa , Max. value = 1919.3 MPa
Equivalent Strain:
Min. value = 0 , Max. value = 1.9124e-2
Case 3 : Structural Steel NL
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 1390 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 0 MPa , Max. value = 2622.4 MPa
Equivalent Strain:
Min. value = 0 , Max. value = 1.8388e-2
CONCLUSIONS:-
Comparing results for all 3 cases:

From above table, we can observe that:
- Total deformation is same in case of Copper Alloy NL and Stainless Steel NL.
- Equivalent stress is maximum in Stainless Steel NL.
- Equivalent strain is maximum in Copper Alloy NL.
