Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Aim: To conduct bullet penetrating a Bucket challenge and comparing it for the bucket made either from Aluminum Alloy nonlinear, Stainless Steel Alloy nonlinear, and Titanium Alloy Nonlinear.

Procedure:

Materials: From the engineering data, go to nonlinear materials and import Aluminum Alloy nonlinear, Stainless Steel Alloy nonlinear, Titanium Alloy Nonlinear, and TOTEM.

Geometry: Drag and drop the geometry in space claim to upload it.

Setup:

Components: Apply the required non-linear material to the bucket and TOTEM to the bullet.

Mesh: Apply edge sizing on the bucket edges. These are the edges that will be penetrated by the bullet.

Analysis Settings:

  • Number of time steps: 1
  • End time: 1e-002s

Load Settings:

  • To fix the bucket, apply fixed support at the top rim of the bucket.
  • Apply a constant velocity of 139000mm/s to the bullet body.

Solution: To compare the materials I have obtained the equivalent stresses experienced in the bucket using three types of materials.

Results & Discussion:

Aluminum Alloy nonlinear: The maximum stress offered is 3171.2 MPa. Here the peaks are the stresses experienced by the bucket at the instance of penetration. For the first edge, the materials offer 2100MPa and then it breaks; then the 2nd penetration occurs at the 3171.2 MPa.

Stainless Steel Alloy nonlinear: The maximum stress offered is 4206.4 MPa. Here the 1st and second penetration occur at higher stresses which are at 4206.4 MPa and it is greater than Al alloy.

Titanium Alloy Nonlinear: The maximum stress offered is 4476.6 MPa. As we all know that titanium alloys are much stronger than other alloys and the proof is here. It bears higher stresses before penetrating.

Conclusion: Thus a bucket made of titanium alloy is stronger than SS alloy which is stronger than Al alloy.
