Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
A) TITLE:- Bullet penetrating through bucket simulation using ansys workbench 2019 V3.
B) OBJECTIVE :- To simulate bullet penetration motion to study different parameters like equivalnet stress , total deformation , etc.
C) MODELING :- The model consisiting of a bucket and a bullet is imported into the dynamic explicit analysis module.
D) ANALYSIS :-
1) The bucket is assigned with different explicit materilas while the tool is assigned with tantalum material.
2) No conatcts and joints are required to be generated in this model.
3) The workpiece and tool bot are meshed with 15 mm mesh size.
4)The analysis is carried out for a very short span of time with end time as 0.01 sec. as this is a very short period phenomenon with large deformation , hence a dynamic explict module has to be used for the analysis.
5)The bucket is made fixed while the bullet is assigned with initial linear velocity of 300000 mm/sec. this velocity is different for different materials.
6) the simulation is then carried out and the results obtained are summarized below:-
E) RESULTS :-
I) CASE 1 - MATERIAL OF BUCKET:- AL 1100-O & VELOCITY OF BULLET=300000 MM/SEC
II) CASE 2 - MATERIAL OF BUCKET:- COPPER & VELOCITY OF BULLET=500000 MM/SEC
III)CASE 3 - MATERIAL OF BUCKET:- SS 304 & VELOCITY OF BULLET=600000 MM/SEC
The results obtained are tabulated below:-
F) DISCUSSION:
I) the maximum deformation is in case-3 with stainless steel 304 as a bucket material.
II) The maximum stress is observed to be in case -3 ( 717.71 MPa) wit SS304 as bucket material.
- If we consider the properties of the materials in case-1 , 2 and 3 then the SS304 (case-3) has the maximum value of Young's modulus of elasticity. The young's modulus value represents the resistance to deformation. as SS304 has maximum value of Young's modulus it offers maximum resistance to deformation and thus the stress generated is also maximum.
- becasue of the same reason the Velocity of bullet required to penetrate through the SS304 bucket is maximum(600000 mm/sec).
- If we see failure patterns then it can be observed that copper bucket ( case-2) has distorted the most.
