Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Here we analyze the stress and deformation for two different geometries:
Case 1:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Case 2:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Two offset circular holes 90mm away from center hole with diamter 30mm each
The peak stress and deformation for Case 1 are shown below. We see that the peak stress is approximately .63 MPa or 630,000 N/m^2

The peak stress occurs at the hole which is to be expected. A section view is seen below

Similarly, we plot the total deformation and peak stress for Case 2, which can be seen below. We see that the peak stress is approximately .58 MPa or 580,000 N/m^2. We note that the stress is lower than in Case 1

Question:
From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select?
Answer:
From an analysis standpoint the second geometry with the additional holes will be selected. The total stress and deformation are lowe
Question:
From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?
Answer:
From a manufacturing standpoint the first case will be selected. The part with the single hole will be cheaper and faster to produce than the part with the three holes
