Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Comparison of deformation and stresses:

Max deformation Max Strss

Case 1 0.00027 mm 0.60MPa

Case 2 0.00029 mm 0.58 MPa

From analysis point of view, case 2 is selected, since the stress in case 2 is less than case 1. In case 1 there is sudden change in cross section, so stress concentration is more while in case 2, there is gradual change in cross section, as there are smaller circles before and after the middle circle. So the stress concentration values are less in case 2 compared to case 1.

From manufacturing point of view case 1 has less machinging of holes compared to case2. For case 2, there are two extra holes, so alignment of all the three holes is required. So case 1 is comparatively simple to manufacture as compared to case1.
