Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Aim: To design a plate with hole(s) and determine the best case out of the two.

Procedure:

Case 1: Plate with 1 Hole

  • Select Static Structural, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
  • Choose material under Engineering Data. Structural Steel.
  • Under geometry, double-click to open SpaceClaim.
  • Extrude a 300mm X 120mm rectangle by 30mm.
  • Cut a 60mm diameter hole at the center of the block. Exit SpaceClaim.
  • Under Model, we mesh the block with tetramesh elements.
  • The element size was 8mm.
  • Left face was fixed.
  • Right face was given a force of 500N axially. (X-direction)
  • The model was solved, and Equivalent Stress and Total Deformation was requested as solver output.

Case 2: Plate with 3 holes

  • Select Static Structural, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
  • Choose material under Engineering Data. Structural Steel.
  • Under geometry, double-click to open SpaceClaim.
  • Edit the geometry to add 2 holes of 30mm dia each at 90mm from either side of the hole at the center. Exit SpaceClaim.
  • Under Model, we update the existing tetra mesh.
  • The element size was 8mm.
  • Left face was fixed.
  • Right face was given a force of 500N axially. (X-direction)
  • The model was solved, and Equivalent Stress and Total Deformation was requested as solver output.

Questions:

Consider you are a Product Engineer in an Automotive industry. You are assigned the following responsibilities:

Q1. Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for the 2 cases.

Ans.

Case

Holes

Equivalent Stress (MPa)

Total Deformation(mm)

Mesh Size (mm)

1

1

0.59103

0.00027485

2

3

0.57212

Q2. From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?

Ans. From an analysis perspective, I would choose the plate with the single hole. This is because this plate would have lower stress concentration that the plate with 3 holes.

Q3. From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?

Ans. From a manufacturing perspective I will choose case 1 yet again. This is because drilling 3 holes is costlier than drilling 1 hole.

PS: I have also attached a Word Document consisting of the Deformation and Equivalent Stress simulation videos for both cases.
