Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Objective: In this study two different plate with same size and different consisting operation are compared. This comparison will be based on stress generation and also some other result also be seen. This study is done in Ansys 2022

Given plates with dimension:

Case1:

1.Generate the model of plate with given size, in our case the model is generated in solidworks.

Case2:

Procedure:

1.Geometry

  • Input the model as igs format in geometry

2.Material assignment

  • Open Engineering Materials and select the required material.
  • Structural steel is a default material in ANSYS

3.Meshing

  • For both cases element size =1mm
  • Method=Tetrahedron

4.Boundary condition

  • Fixed the left face
  • Apply the force 500N on Right face of plate.

5.Solution

  • In this study we are finding the total deformation and Equivalent stress(von-mises stress).

Results (output):

Model

                    Case-1                                                                          Case-2

Mesh

Case-1

 Case-2

Boundary condition

                                    Case-1                                                             Case-2

Deformation

Case-1  Max deformation=0.00027mm

Case-2  Max deformation=0.00029mm

Stress

Case-1  Max stress=0.60512 Mpa

Case-2 Max stress=0.58245 Mpa

Conclusion:

  • By design point of view, Plate-2 is good as compare to plate-1 because less stress generation as compare to plate-1 so it can handle more load.
  • If the load is not focusing subject, then by manufacturing point of view Plate-1 is good as compare to Plate-2 because plate-2 consist two more hole and if one hole take 1 second to drill then 2 hole will take 2 sec more as compare to plate-1 so for large scale production example 60 plates of case 2 will take 120 sec (2 hour) more as compare to case-1 plate
