Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
| case 1 | case2 | |
| Max stress | 0.59Mpa | 0.35Mpa |
| deformstion | 0.00027mm | 0.00018mm |
Design consideration:If we observe Von mises stress result, I would recommand Case 2 is best from analysis point of view as max stress induced is less in this case. This can be explained from stress flow line theory very easily. In case of single hole, stress flow lines experiences change in their direction around 60 mm hole directly. but if we see case 2, stress flow lines get guided smoothly around first 30 mm hole then 60 mm hole and then 30 mm hole again, rather than changing direction around only one hole suddenly.
Manufacturingh point of view:
from this point of view, case 1 is recommanded, as it involves less number of operations than case 2. In case 1, drilling of only 1 hole is required whereas in case 2, drilling of three holes is required. so it requires 2 drills of different sizes dia 60 and dia 30.
Considering all this factors case 2 is more time consuming and hence case 1 will be preffred from manufacturing point of view.
Report case 1
1. geometry

Material: Structural steel
2. Meshing
Mesh elements=Tetrahedral
mesh type: patch conforming
refinement: yes, around the circular edges, because of stress concentration.
3.result:
Max stress:0.59 MPa

Max deformation= 0.00027 mm

case 2: Plate with 3 holes
1. Geometry:

material: Structural steel
2. Meshing
Mesh elements=Tetrahedral
mesh type: patch conforming
refinement: yes, around the circular edges, because of stress concentration.
3. Boundary condition
4. Results:
Max stress= 0.35 MPa

Max deformation=0.00018 mm
