Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for the 2 cases

In the first case we can see that the stress developed around the hole is slightly less as compared to second case. The stress is mainly focused around the hole region so in increase in the hole there is increase in the stress concentrated region.

Talking about the total deformation as seen in the figure the deformation is more in plate with 3 hole then plate with single hole as due to more stress generated in the body for same force.

From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?

From an analysis point of view I will suggest that plate with single hole is to be used as less stress and deformation is found in the body for same amount of force and thickness

From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?

According to me from a manufacturing standpoint , we should go with the second design as the material is saved and there is not that much deviation in the results in both the cases for given value of force and thickness.
