Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

1. The above-shown models are generated using space claim and the following results are obtained ;

For a plate with a hole at the center (Case 1):

  • Equivalent Stress developed: 0.60699 MPa
  • Total Deformation: 0.275 mm Max. Deformation

For a plate with three holes (Case 2):

  • Equivalent Stress developed: 0.58079 MPa
  • Total Deformation: 0.297mm Max. Deformation.

For the two cases, the above-mentioned results are obtained. It is seen from the results that in case 1 equivalent stress developed is maximum, while in case 2 equivalent deformation is maximum.

2. From the analysis standpoint I would prefer case 2 over case 1 because in case 2 stress developed is less compared to the plate with a hole at the center, and also the stress developed around the center hole is very less and evenly distributed along the centerline around the smaller holes.

3. From the manufacturing standpoint I would prefer case 1 over case 2 because even though the stress developed is slightly higher, the process involving manufacturing a plate with a single hole is simple from the plate with 3 holes. It will result in reducing machining time and cost of the part.

4. REPORT:

Case 1 :

From the analysis, it's been found that when applied load, stress formed along the application of load is less in comparison with stress concentration at the middle which means that crack formation takes place in the region of highest stress. Deformation is more at the load point than at the fixed point.

Case 2:

In case 2, stress concentration is very similar to case 1, but the difference is that due to the three holes, the stress formed around the center hole is less in comparison with case 1. Maximum stress formed in the middle of the hole. Smaller holes contribute to less stress concentration. Deformation, in this case, is more due to less volume.

Conclusion:

This challenge helped me to understand that differences in design lead to a difference in stress concentration and in deformation.

Irregularities in the geometry or material are a major factor for stress concentration.
