Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Objective: Perform structural analysis on two different plates with holes to compare the displacement and stress induced.

3D Model:

1. Plate with one hole (60mm Dia at the center)

2. Plate with three holes ( Two additional holes 30mm dia 90mm from the center)

Overall Size Specification:

  • 1. Width : 120mm
  • 2. Length : 300mm
  • 3. Thickness : 30mm

Boundary Conditions:

1. Material used: Structural Steel

2. Force: Tensile Load 500N on the 120mm side surface

Model 1 :

Boundary condition is applied on the model

The model is meshed with the element size of 5mm

Results for Total deformation and Stress is generated.

(Total Deformation, 500N load on the right side)

(Total Stress, 500N load on the right side)

Model 2:

Boundary condition is applied on the model

The model is meshed with the element size of 5mm

Results for Total deformation and Stress is generated.

(Total Deformation, 500N load on the right side)

(Total Stress, 500N load on the right side)

Results and Observations:

S.NO DESCRIPTION TOTAL DEFORMATION (MAX) (mm) EQUIVALENT STRESS(MAX) (MPa)
1. PLATE WITH A HOLE 0.0002748 1.2036
2. PLATE WITH THREE HOLES 0.0003176 0.5547

Observation:

1. The difference in the Total deformation between both the model is Negligible., as the difference is around 0.00004mm.

2. The stress induced in the plate with a single hole is more than twice as that of the plate with three holes.

Analysis Stand-Point:

From the results it is clear that additional two holes reduces the stress induced on the main center holes. So instead the entire stress acting on the center hole, it is better to scatter the stress on the two smaller holes.

So this 60mm hole can withstand much larger torque if it is for mounting.

I will recommend to go with Model 2.

Manufacturing Stand-Point:

1. Model 1 has single hole, so the production time for drilling is less compared to Model 2.

2. The fixture needs to be adjusted if we are drilling three holes.

3. Cost wise the manufacturing of Model 2 is high than the model 1.

4. In case of bulk production the wastage from Model 2 will be more.

So it is clear from manufacturing point of view Model 1 is better option. But Model 2 can withstand much higher torque compared to Model 1 during bolting or mounting of components during manufacturing.

I will recommend to go with model 1.
