Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
OBJECTIVE
Selection of Design of Plate based on Analysis and Manufacturing point of view.
Case 1: Plate with Single Circular hole
Length: 300 mm
Height: 120 mm
Thickness: 30 mm
Center hole Dia: 60 mm

Case 2: Plate with Three Circular holes
Length: 300 mm
Height: 120 mm
Thickness: 30 mm
Center Hole Dia: 60 mm
Hole Dia2: 30 mm

Deformation Comparison
Case 1 Case 2

As per the dimensions of the plate , load of 500 N is not causing significant deformation in both the designs, Total Deformation in both the plates is approximately equal to 0.002 mm.
As the Applied load increases the difference between total deformation of both the plates will increase and plate in case 2 will deform more due to 2 extra holes present in case2.
Von Mises Stress Comparison
Case 1 Case 2

For Design based on Von Mises Stress, Currently stresses in both the plates are far away from the yield point i.e no failure due to stress.
But if the Load value increases plate 2 design is better because of the Smoother stress flow lines in case 2 as compared to case1.
Analysis Standpoint
Based on stress analysis we will choose plate design in case 2 due to lower stress value.
Manufacturing Standpoint
From Manufacturing Point of View , Plate Design in Case 1 should be adopted, because cost of making 2 extra holes is not at all justified by the very small reduction in stress value.
Conclusion
Plate Design 1 will be more practical approach for manufacturing of this Component.
