Challenge

Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

The deformation of the first specimen 2.7492e-004 mm and fro the second specimen it is 2.9698e-004mm.

Second one has more deformation by a minute margin.

In the case of total stress the first specimen has a maximum stress of 0.59956 MPa near the hole whereas maximum stress of 0.58683 MPa. the second specimen experience a slightly lesser maximum stress.

I would select the second design as it has the maximum stress value less than the other design. Also the first design has the higher stress concentration.

From a manufacturing standpoint the first design is more simpler to manufacture. I has only one hole to be drilled whereas the second design has three holes that too with different hole size.

Objective

Compare the deformation and stress of the design models

Mesh

Used a tetrahedron mesh with element size 5mm.

First design No of nodes : 67944

Second design No of nodes : 13307

Boundary Condition

One side of the plate is fixed and the other side is appiled with a force of 500N which induceses a tentional stress on the plate.
