Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
- Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for the 2 cases (40 points)
Case 1:
Max Deformation= 0.00027493 mm
Max Von mises Stress= 0.60744 MPa
Case 2:
Max Deformation= 0.0002973 mm
Max Von mises Stress= 0.58298 MPa
we can observe that as the no of holes on the flat plate increases, the max deformation, and max von-stress decreased.
- From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why? (20 points)
As per our analysis, it is better to use the case-1 specimen itself as the max deformation is less. Though the max stress is more in case-1, it is far below the yield point of the material.
- From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why? (20 points)
In terms of manufacturing standpoint also, the case-1 specimen is recommended. Even though the amount of material used is less in case-2 than in case-1, but machining cost for case-2 will be higher than case1. So, the case-1 specimen is recomended
- Report writing(20 points)
In conclusion, the case-1 specimen is recommended.
