Transient Structural Analysis of Slider Crank Mechanism Using ANSYS Workbench

Objective: Perform Transient Structural Analysis on Slider Crank Mechanism

Case 1: Using Structural Steel For all the Components and Assigning No Contact Region for the Model

Case 2: Create contacts between the various slider crank components and assign material properties to the geometry with frictional coefficient as per given below,

Geometry

Materials

Coefficient of friction

Crank to Handle 1

Structural steel - Low Carbon Steel

0.3

Handle 1 to Handle 2

Low Carbon Steel - Grey Cast iron

0.23

Handle 2 to Fixture

Grey cast iron - Grey cast iron

0.15

Geometry

Materials

For Case1

  • We use only Structural Steel for all Slider crank Components

For Case 2

  • Low Carbon Steel-Handle 1
  • Grey Cast Iron - Handle 2 and Fixture

Connections

  • Contact

Case 1 as No Contact region

  • Case2
  • Crank - Handle 1

Type : Frictional

Frictional coefficient :0.3

  • Handle 1- Handle 2

Type : Frictional

Frictional coefficient :0.23

  • Handle 2 to Fixture

Type: Frictional

Frictional coefficient :0.15

Joint

For Both Cases Joints Connection are same

  • Fixed Joint for the Fixture Component

Connection type : Body To Ground

  • Revolute joint For the Crank Upper mount

Connection Type: Body to Ground

Behavior: Deformable

  • Revolute joint for Handle1 to Crank lower mount

Connection Type: Body to Body

Reference: Handle 1

Mobile Reference: Crank

  • Translational Joint for the Handle 2 to Handle1 along X-axis

Connection Type: Body to Body

Reference: Handle 2

Mobile Reference: Handle 1

  • Translational Joint for the Fixture to Handle2 along X-axis

Connection Type: Body to Body

Reference: Fixture

Mobile Reference: Handle 2

Mesh

Element Size :8mm

Analysis Settings

Boundary Condition

  • Joint Load For the Revolute Ground - Crank

Type Rotation

Solution Output:

Case1

Total Deformation(6.4585mm)

Equivalent Stress for Crank(0.99831MPa)

Total Velocity For the crank(139.63mm/s)

Case2

Total Deformation(7.0884mm)

Equivalent Stress for Crank(78.813MPa)

Total Velocity For the crank(139.43mm/s)

Contact Tool

  • Frictional stress

For Contact region

  • Crank - Handle 1
  • Handle 2 to Fixture

The Frictional Stress is zero because there is gap between The Components , The contact Status For Both is only Near Not Sliding or Sticking so there will be no Frictional Stress Generated

For Contact Region

  • Handle 1- Handle 2 (0.22451Mpa)

Conclusion :

  • Because of the contact region and coefficient of friction Assigned between the components in case 2 that will be restrict the motion which will result in higher stress and higher deformation .
  • Since case 1 doesn't have any contact region they moved freely without restriction thus it result in lesser deformation and lesser stress
  • The component has only one true contact region which is contact between Handle 1- Handle 2 , so we can see the frictional stress in that region alone
  • If they weren't any gap between the components, Crank - Handle 1 contact region would have higher frictional stress because the coefficient of friction is higher compare to other
