Procedure:

  1. Open the intake manifold model in ANSA v19.1.2 using either file >> open or by using the shortcut, ctrl+o.
  2. Do topo operation on the whole geometry to join nearby edges. Change the element length to 1mm to visualize the geometry properly. This can be done by using the length option under the perimeter section in the mesh module.
  3. Run a geometry check on the whole geometry by going into checks>>geometry from the tools menu. This will show us all the geometry errors that need to be cleared before meshing. (In this case, no errors were shown.)
  4. Resolve all the geometry errors by using suitable methods. While some of the errors can be fixed automatically, others need to be dealt with separately using various options under the topo module.
  5. After clearing the geometry errors, confirm by running a geometry check again. If all the errors have been cleared, we can move on to the next step.
  6. Before meshing, we will assign the required mesh parameter and the quality criteria.
  7. Now that we have removed all the geometric errors we can move on to meshing. The given component is solid. So we will be doing volume meshing for this model. First, we will mesh the complete surface of this model using tria elements. We will be using both normal trias as well as ortho trias. Ortho trias will be mostly used to capture curved surfaces properly, whereas, normal trias will be used for capturing flat surfaces.
  8. Mesh the complete surface area of the model with tria elements such that quality criteria are fulfilled.
  9. Now the next step is to define the model as volumes so that volume mesh can be generated. For the current model, the volume is defined by using the define volume option in the volume mesh module.
  10. After defining volumes, go to the list option under volumes in the volume mesh module. The list option will show the list of defined volumes. We can now perform tetra mesh on the defined volumes by right-clicking on volume and choosing either the tetra-rapid or tetra-FEM method. These are different algorithms used for unstructured volume meshing. Once it is completed, you will be getting a full volume meshed model.
  11. Check for the quality of the elements in the hidden mode. If there are quality issues, they need to be fixed. Finally, look for kinks or dips on the surface. We must ensure that there are no kinks or dips on the surface.

Results:

  1. Performed geometry clean up.
  2. Performed tetra meshing with acceptable quality.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learnt the usage of various tools of ANSA software.
  • Able to fix the geometrical errors for given model.
  • Learnt to mesh solid components using tetra mesh.
  • Able to mesh the given model by satisfying the quality criteria.

Conclusion:

  • The given model is imported to the ANSA software and the geometrical errors are fixed.
  • The surface of the component is meshed with the combination of ortho tria and normal tria elements.
  • The volume of the component is defined and meshed using tetra FEM elements.
  • The quality is achieved as well as kinks and dips are eliminated.
