Tool Test 1

Objective: To perform meshing and geometry cleanup for the given components. Extract the midsurface and assign the value of thickness.

The required element quality criteria is:

Procedure for Component 1:

1) After importing the file in ANSA, we proceed to check the geometrical errors in the component, with the use of geometry check from checks manager. The displayed errors like crack between cons were resolved by using the auto fix option.

Fig: Errors in the component after performing geometry check, resolved.

After resolving the geometrical errors, the geometry was refined by using the length option in perimeter under the mesh module.

2) Midsurfce extraction: Before extracting the midsurface of the component, thickness is mesured. There exists varying thickness in the geometry and hence different methods are to be used in order to obtain the mid surface. Methods like offset and middle are used depending upon the thickness.

Fig: Using the offset method, value entered is half of the thickness of that region.

Fig: Midsurface of the component is extracted

After midsurface extraction, the thickness needs to be assigned which is done by using the PID tool.

Fig: Assigning thickness to various regions

3) Meshing: After extracting the mid surfaces, we proceed to meshing the components. As per the quality critera specified, the values are entered.

Fig: Element quality criteria

Since, the target or the average length to be taken as 4, values are to be entered in mesh parameters as well.

After feeding in the required values, mesh check was run from the checks manager in order to obtain and rectify the errors in mesh quality, and thus, improve the quality of the mesh.

Fig: Obtaining the meshing quality

Best mesh featured is used initially and the mesh quality is checked under the defined quality criteria. Then the quality of the mesh is improved wherever needed by using tools such as perimeter: num +/- ( used wherever the cons failed to meet the min length criteria), reconstruct( which reconstructs the mesh with any available meshing algorithm considering the mesh parameters) etc.

Component 2:

Procedure:

After importing the file in ANSA, we proceed to check the geometrical errors in the component, with the use of geometry check from checks manager. The displayed errors like needle faces, unchecked faces etc were resolved by using the auto fix option. To fix the cracks, the coons tool ws used under "surfaces".

Single cons were fixed by using topo.

Extracting midsurface:

Before extracting the midsurface of the component, thickness is mesured. There exists varying thickness in the geometry and hence different methods are to be used in order to obtain the mid surface. Methods like offset and middle are used depending upon the thickness.

The offset value specified is half of the thickness of that face.

After midsurface extraction, the thickness needs to be assigned which is done by using the PID tool.

Meshing:

After extracting the mid surfaces, we proceed to meshing the components.

The mesh quality check from checks manager showed no errors.

Conclusion: Geometry cleanup was performed on the given component  and component 2. Midsurface was extracted using various features, keeping in mind the varying thickness of the geometry. After the mid surface extraction, thickness was assigned using PID. Meshing was done pertaining to the given element quality criteria and mesh quality was further improved using features available in the mesh module.
