Supervised Learning - Classification Week 7 Challenge

1. Pros and cons of SVM

Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are a type of machine learning algorithm that can be used for classification or regression tasks. Here are some pros and cons of using SVM:

Pros:

1. Effective in high-dimensional spaces: SVMs are particularly useful in situations where the number of features is very large and the number of observations is relatively small. This is because SVMs can efficiently handle high-dimensional spaces.

2. Good for handling non-linear data: SVMs can efficiently handle non-linear data by mapping the input space into a higher-dimensional space where a linear decision boundary can be found. This is done using a kernel function.

3. Works well with both small and large datasets: SVMs are memory efficient and can work well with both small and large datasets. In addition, they can be trained using incremental algorithms, making them useful for online learning scenarios.

4. Good generalization performance: SVMs have been shown to have good generalization performance, meaning they can perform well on new, unseen data.

Cons:

1. Can be sensitive to the choice of kernel function: The performance of SVMs can be sensitive to the choice of kernel function. Selecting the right kernel function can be challenging and may require domain expertise.

2. Computationally intensive: Training SVMs can be computationally intensive, especially for large datasets or complex models. This can limit the scalability of SVMs in some scenarios.

3. Requires careful tuning of parameters: SVMs have several parameters that need to be carefully tuned for optimal performance. This can require significant trial and error, as well as computational resources.

4. Limited to binary classification: SVMs are designed for binary classification problems and can be less effective for multi-class classification tasks. However, there are extensions to SVMs that can handle multi-class problems, such as one-vs-all and one-vs-one approaches.

2. Apply SVM to the “Surface defects in stainless steel plates” dataset and evaluate it?
