Project

Static analysis of a plate with the hole

Aim: Perform the static analysis on the plate with the hole and compare the results based on the stress, strain, and displacement.

Case 1

The thickness of the plate is 30mm.

Case 2.

The thickness of the plate is 30mm.

All the dimensions are in mm.

Material Used: Alloy steel in both cases.

Boundary Conditions: One side is fixed and the other side is applied with a tensile load of 1000N (pulling on one of the shorter sides of the plate 120mm*30 mm surface) in both the cases as shown in the figure below:

Case 1.

Case 2

Case 1: 1. The plate was modeled in Solidworks

2. A new static study was chosen.

3. The material was defined as alloy steel.

4. Boundary and load conditions were given as per requirement.

5. Mesh quality was selected to be fine.

6. Ran the study and generated the plots which are shown below.

Stress Plot (above fig.)

Displacement plot (above fig.)

Strain Plot (above fig.)

Case 2: 1.

Strain Plot (above fig.)

Displacement Plot (above fig.)

Results:

S.No

Description

Plate with 1 Hole (case 1)

Plate with 3 Hole (case 2)

1.

Stress (von-misses N/mm^2)

1.209* 10^6

1.129* 10^6

2.

Strain

4.308* 10^(-6)

4.055* 10^(-6)

3.

Displacement (mm)

0.000529

0.000565

4.

Yield Strength (N/mm^2)`

6.204 * 10^8

6.204 * 10^8

Conclusion: 1. The yield strength in both cases is the same.

2. Stress in a plate with lesser no. of the hole is higher.

3. More holes can act as a stress reliever for the rectangular plate.
