Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code
Answer 1
sketches are uploaded below
Above the ground level, an opening is provided to enhance the aesthetic appeal. All doors swing inwards. Here are specific details regarding the layout:
i. The main door faces the north direction. ii. Toilets are strategically placed away from the kitchen. iii. The dining area is located near the kitchen and far from the main door. iv. Bedrooms are situated in the southwest and southeast, with the northeast being avoided. v. All rooms are rectangular in shape. vi. The central area of the house is intentionally left empty. vii. The kitchen is positioned in the southeast direction. viii. The toilet is located in the northwest. ix. The living room is situated in the northwest. x. No overhanging beams are permitted in the rooms. xi. The pooja room is placed at the east.
The required drawings include:
I. Centerline drawing II. Footing and column layout with reinforcement details III. Column schedule with reinforcement details IV. Plinth beam layout with reinforcement details V. First-floor beam layout with reinforcement details VI. First-floor slab layout with reinforcement details VII. Lift pit and headroom reinforcement details
Answer 2
Load calculations are based on assumed room sizes:
- All columns have dimensions of 300mm x 300mm.
- All beams are sized at 300mm x 450mm.
- The slab thickness is 125mm.
- The wall height is set at 3m.

• Dead Loads
A. Columns The column's height is 3m. Dead load of the column, sized at 0.3x 0.3x 0.3: Total volume of the column = 0.3x0.3x0.3 = 0.27 m^3 Concrete unit weight = 25 KN/m^3 Dead load of the column = unit weight of concrete * volume of concrete = 25 KN/m^3 * 0.27m^3 = 6.75 KN
B. Beams Total cross-sectional area of the beam = 0.3*0.45 = 0.135m^2 Concrete unit weight = 25 KN/m^3 Dead load of the beam = unit weight of concrete * area of concrete = 25 KN/m^3 * 0.135m^2 = 3.375 KN/m
C. Slabs Dead load of a 125mm thick slab Concrete unit weight = 25 KN/m^3 Self-weight of the slab = unit weight of concrete * thickness of concrete = 25 KN/m^3 * 0.125m = 3.125 KN/m^2
D. Walls Wall height is 3m. Dead load of a 300mm thick wall Unit weight of brick wall = 20 KN/m^3 Self-weight of the wall = unit weight of brick wall * thickness of wall * height of wall = 20 KN/m^3 * 0.3m * 3m = 18 KN/m
• Live Loads
As per IS875 (part2) table 1 for residential buildings, use a live load of UDL 2KN/m^2. Since there are no balconies and the building is a house, adopt a live load of 2KN/m^2 on the slabs.
Near the staircase, provide a live load of UDL 3KN/m^2.
• Wind Load Calculations
Since the building's height is less than 10m, wind load calculations are not implemented. The total height of the building is 6m (3m + 3m).
