Sketch a G+1 residential plan according to Vaastu Shastra and Calculation of Loads as per IS code

AIM :

Sketch a G+1 floor residential plan, according to Vaastu Shastra, and list down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction. Also, assume the sizes of the structural elements (Column, Beam, Slab, etc.,) and accordingly calculate the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.

Introduction :

  • Vaastu Shastra :
  • Vaastu Shastra is ancient Indian science of architecture and act as guideline to design your home in the way that enhance positive energy.
  • Our nature is abundant with power houses of energy like sun, wind, moon, water, earth and fire.
  • Effect of sunrays, flow of winds, pull of earth’s magnetic field and cosmic energies.
  • A good home needs to radiate the right kind of energy.
  • A person dwelling in a house under the influence of specific energy field which comes under the influence of specific energy field.
  • Architectural changes are not possible for a ready to move in house.

Vaastu concept:

Significant of eight direction :

  • Four cardinal direction north, east, west, south.
  • Four intercardinal direction north-east, north-west, south-east, south-west
  • Each direction signifies an aspect of life and is governed by various gods.
  • North - wealth
  • South - dharma
  • West and east - overall prosperity.

Basic principle of vaastu Shastra :

  • Rooms should be preferably in square or rectangle
  • Rooms should be airy, well lit, bright and clean.
  • Center of the house should be an empty space.
  • Heavy furniture should be kept in south-west direction.
  • Avoid keeping plants and water features in the room.
  • Dining space should be near the kitchen and not near the main door.
  • Mirror facing the bed is strictly not allowed. Mirrors in the bedroom need to be placed in such a way that the bed cannot be seen.
  • In a house kitchen room should be kept in south-east is best. North-east to be avoided.
  • In a house staircase room should be kept in south-west is best. North-east to be avoided.
  • In a house bath/toilet room should be kept in north-west is best. North-east to be avoided.
  • In a house master bedroom should be kept in south-west is best.
  • In a house guest room should be kept in north-west is best.
  • In a house living room should be kept in north-west is best.
  • In a house overhead tank should be kept in west is the best.
  • In a house underground tank should be kept in north-east is best. South-west to be avoided.
  • List of structural drawing to be provided are :
  • Centre line drawing
  • Footing and column layout with reinforcement details.
  • Column schedule with reinforcement details
  • Plinth beam layout with reinforcement details.
  • First floor beam layout with reinforcement details
  • First floor slab layout with reinforcement details
  • Lift pit head room reinforcement details

AIM :

To assume the sizes of the structural elements (Column, Beam, Slab, etc.,) and accordingly calculate the individual corresponding loads from the members as per IS code.

Procedure :

Assumed dimensions of structural members :

Column = 300mm x 400mm

Beam Ground floor = 300mm x 400mm

First floor = 300mm x 450mm

Thickness of slab = 150mm

Wall height = 3.00m

Thickness of exterior wall = 230mm

Thickness of interior wall = 150mm

Riser = 150mm

Tread = 300mm

Depth of waist & landing slab = 150mm

Dead load calculation :

Unit weight of RCC = 25 KN/M3

Unit weight of brickwork = 20 KN/M3

Self-weight of column = 0.30 x 0.40 x 3.0 x 25 = 9 KN/M3

Self-weight of beam -GF = 0.30 x 0.40 x 25 = 3 KN/M

Self-weight of beam - FF = 0.30 x 0.45 x 25 = 3.375 KN/M

Self-weight of slab = 0.15 x 25 = 3.75 KN/M2

Self-weight of exterior wall = 0.23 x 3.0 x 20 = 13.8 KN/M

Self-weight of interior wall = 0.15 x 3.0 x 20 = 9KN/M

Self-weight of ceiling = 0.25 KN/ M2 (As per IS 875 part-1)

Self-weight of roofing = 0.83 KN/ M2 (As per IS 875 part-1)

Staircase

Self-weight of steps = ½ x 0.15 x 0.30 x 25 = 0.562 KN/M

Self-weight of waist slab = 1 x 0.15 x 25 = 3.75 KN/M

LIVE LOAD : (As per IS 875 part-2 )

Kitchen = 2 KN/M2

Living room = 2 KN/M2

Toilet & bath room = 2 KN/M2

Bed room = 2 KN/M2

Staircase = 3 KN/M2

Store room = 3 KN/M2

balcony = 3 KN/M2

WIND LOAD :

According to IS: 875 part 3, wind load is to be considered when the height of building is more than 10 m. As here it is not that case we do not have to consider about wind load.

Results :

A G+1 floor residential plan, according to Vaastu Shastra was sketched.

Listed down the names of the structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction.

By assuming the sizes of the structural elements (Column, Beam, Slab, etc.,) individual corresponding loads from the members was calculated as per IS code.

Appendix

IS 456: 2000 revised on 2016 for reinforced concrete structures.

IS 875: 1987 revised on 2008 (part I) for dead load

IS 875: 1987 revised on 2015 (part II) for live load

IS 875: 1987 revised on 2008 (part III) for wind load
