Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus calculation and optimization

Objective:

To calculate the section modulus for the hood section and optimize the section of hood to improve the section modulus.

Introduction:

Section modulus is the geometric property of a given cross-section used in the design of flexural members. Section modulus depends only on the cross-section shape of the beam or structure. For symmetric sections, the value of section modulus is the same for both above and below of centroid of the cross-section.

Importance of section modulus:

The section modulus of the cross-sectional shape is of significant importance in designing beams. It is a direct measure of the strength of the beam. A beam that has a larger section modulus than another will be stronger and capable of supporting greater loads.

The elastic section modulus is defined as S = I / y, where I is the second moment of area (or area moment of inertia) and y is the distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end.

Hood part:

Case 1: Section modulus of the initial hood design:

Cross section of hood 1

Section inertia of the hood 1

From the above analysis

I (minimum value is taken) =4.277998077e^03 mm^4.

Y (from neutral axis to extreme end) =222.45mm.

S=I/Y = 4.277998077e^03 mm^4/222.45mm =19.2312793mm^3.

Case 2 : Section modulus of the hood after modification:

Cross section of the hood

Section modulus of the body is directly proportional to the sectional area of the body.

Here the section area is increased by offsetting the inner panel by 0.5mm downwards . This in turn increases the value of section modulus.

Section inertia of the hood after modification

From the above analysis

I (minimum value is taken) =4.462422764e^03 mm^4.

Y (from neutral axis to extreme end) =222.45mm.

S=I/Y = 4.462422764e^03 mm^4/222.45mm =20.0603406mm^3.

Conclusion

Comparing hood 1 and 2, we can see the section modulus of the modified part got increased.
