Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus Calculation Of Hood
Scope: To calculate the section modulus of the previously designed hood using the formula S = I/y
Section Modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in the design include an area for tension and shear, the radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia, and the polar moment of inertia for stiffness. Any relationship between these properties is highly dependent on the shape in question. Equations for the section moduli of common shapes are given below. There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus, and the plastic section modulus.
S=I/Y
were,
S = Section modulus
I= Moment of Inertia (Unit mm^4)
Y= Distance from Neutral axis to the extreme end (unit mm)
The Unit of a “section modulus” is (mm^3)
Section Modulus:

Moment of inertia(max) = 8.19×10^5×mm^4
Moment of inertia(min) = 5.34×10^3×mm^4
Y=485.7599/2=242.88 mm
S=I/Y
S=5.34×10^3/242.88= 21.98 mm^3
Optimization:

Moment of inertia(max) = 8.16×10^5×mm^4
Moment of inertia(min) = 5.51×10^3×mm^4
Y=485.7599/2=242.87 mm
S=I/Y
S=5.51×10^3/242.87=22.69 mm^3
