Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Sir,

Section modulus

S=I/Y

I-Moment of inertia

Y-Distance between neutral axixs and extreme end of the object

Section modulus gives us an idea how much of load to given structure can take.

Section modulus increases moment of resistance also increases.

The moment of inertia is defined as the product of mass of section and the square of the distance between the reference axis and the centroid of the section.

Moment of inertia for the section is calculated for the defined sketch.Then small structure is changed then moment of inertia is again calculated for the changed sketch.

Then distance between the two edges is calculated then Half of the distance is used as the calculated as section modulus.

Z1=Imin/Ymax

=1.63288e+05/241

=675.623mm3

Z2=Imin/Ymax

=2.05213e+05/241

=851.50mm3

S%=Z2-Z1/z1

=851.50-675.623/675.623

=26.03%

Section of modulus value is 26.03%.
