Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM:
To calculate section modulus of hood and optimize the design to have improved section modulus.
Section Modulus
Section modulus, also known as the Polar Modulus or the Torsional Sectional Modulus, is a geometric parameter for a specific cross-section that is utilised in the construction of beams or flexural members. Area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness are some other geometric parameters employed in design. Any correlation between these attributes depends largely on the geometry under consideration. Below are equations for the section moduli of typical forms. The elastic section modulus and the plastic section moduli are the two different forms of section moduli.
Section Modulus Calculation
Formula
S = I/y
where
S=Section Modlulus
I =Moment Of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
Moment of inertia before optimising

S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) Value is considered
Y = Total distance / 2
Y=483.25/2
Y=241.625
S = 2.7336 * 10^3 / 241.625
= 11.31mm^3
After Optimising

S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) Value is considered
Y = Total distance / 2
Y=483.25/2
Y=241.625
S = 2.7608 * 10^3 / 241.625
= 11.42mm^3
Conclusion
Moment of inertia and section modulus increase as section area increases.
