Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section modulus is the measure of the strength of any section with respect neutral axis
the strenth is measured by the section modulus formula
S=I/Y
S = suction modulus
I = moment of inertia
resistance offered to any load creating moment, bending or twisting
Y = Distance from neutral axis to any extreme end
so as the moment of inertia increases strength of the material also increases and hence higher the section modulus. the strength of the material can be calculated by the calculation of section modulus
so we are going to calculate the value of section modulus of our hood panel

this is section of our hood
this details can be obtained in NX CAD by section inertian analysis
from this
Imax = 4.812141115x10^6 mm4
Imin = 1.445110490x10^4 mm4
Y = 880/2 = 440 mm
Smax = Imax / y = 4.812141115x10^6 / 440 = 109310.48 mm3
Smin = Imin / y = 1.445110490x10^4/ 440 = 32.92056818 mm3
now we are changing hood design creating emboss with respect design criteria

then
I max = 4.929x10^6 mm4
I min = 1.475x10^4 mm4
Smax = Imax / y = 4.929x10^6 / 440 = 111895.45 mm3
Smin = Imin / y =1.475x10^4/ 440 = 33.48409091 mm3
CONCLUSION
- Compare these value od section modulus of the second model of hood is increased almost 1%
- MOI is increased with increase section area
- if increase the gap between inner and outer panel the section area increased and MOI also increased
