Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.

The equation used to find the section modulus is S=I/y

Where S is the section modulus

I is the moment of inertia

y is the distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

This equation is came from the bending equation

Calculation of section modulus for Hood assembly

The Moment of inertia (min) for the Hood is found using the section analysis option in the NX cad

I(min)=9.72*10^3

y=244.35mm

S=I/y=9.72*10^3/244.35

=39.779mm^3

Calculating section modulus Hood

I=1.27*10^4

y=244.35mm

S=I/y=1.27*10^4/244.35

=51.97mm^3

Report

section modulus calculation for the hood is performed

2 sections are analysed and found that in the 2nd section is having more section modulus than the first one. It made a conclusion that if the thickness is directly proposional to section modulus.
