Project 2 - Rankine cycle Simulator

   OBJECTIVE :

  • TO Simulate a Ranking cycle using matlab.
  • Extracting Steam and water properties from Xsteam data (IAPWS IF -97 standard )
  • Calculating all the state points of the cycle based on User input.
  • plotting the T vs s and H vs s plot for the given input.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              RANKING CYCLE:
  • Ranking cycle is an idealized thermodynamics cycle or heat engine in which a fuel is used to produce heat within a boiler converting water into steam which then expands through a turbine producing useful work.
  • this process was developed in 1859 by scottish engineer william j.m Rankine. It is a cycle which converts heat into mechanical energy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               WORKING OF THE RANKING CYCLE SIMULATION :
  • IN PROCESS1-2
  • The dry saturated vapour expands through a turbine generating power. this decerases the temperature and pressure of the vapour and some condesation may occur.
  • PROCESS2-3
  • The vapor-liquid mixture leaving the turbine is condensed at low pressure usually in a surface condenser using cooling water.
  • In well designed and maintained condenser the pressure of the vapor is well below atmospheric pressure  approching the saturation pressure of the operating fluid at the cooling water temperature.
  • PROCESS3-4
  •  The pressure of the condensate is raised in the feed pump.because of the low specific volume of liquid the pump work is relatively small and often neglected in thermodynamics calculations.
  • PROCESS4-1
  • High pressuer liquid enters the boiler from the feed pump and is heated to the saturation temperature (on the saturation curve )
  • the additional of energy causes evaporation of the lliquid until it is fully converted to saturated steam or super heated.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             PROJECT PROGRAM:
  • Xsteam data is used to extract steam and water properties of enthalpy entropy at specific pressure and temperatures for sat liquid sat vapour condition etc
  • The program requires the input of pressure at state point 1 (turbine inlet ),Temperature at same point (deg celcius) and Temp at condenser inlet point 2.
  • With the help of these inlets & from Xsteam data the program calculates all the state points of the ranking cycle.
  • The Xsteam data works as
  • h1=Xsteam ('h_pT',p1,T1);(Returns the enthalpy of water at given pressure and temperature in bar and degC resp.)
  • As we extract the data we use thermodynamics relation to further find state point and extract their data from Xsteam.
  • Sf and sg ,hf and hg where f and g stands for saturated liquid and saturated vapour respectively.
  • The net work  done by turbine work done to run the pump heat in and heat out are calculated  using  standard thermodynamics relation .
  • Efficiency and specific steam consumption of the rankine cycle is calculated.
  • T,s and h  are extracted at vapour and liquid line for plotting purpose after 4th point for the variation you observe in tne plot.
  • Saturation curve is plotted in red for saturated liquid and saturated gas.
  • plot of T vs s and h vs s is created from all the points obtained from the program.
  • The plot changes as the input changes for the above mentioned inputs.
  • Result are  displayed in the command window.
